Month in Review for September 2016: Syrinx Problems

My neighbors' lovely tree
The good news from September is that I finally know what's been causing the pins and needles sensation in my hands (and my zombie arm, for that matter), and possibly what's causing my inability to walk unassisted. The bad news is, I still have a bit of a wait ahead of me to see a specialist, and I'm not too pleased to have learned (through furious Googling, and support groups) that usually a syrinx causes damage that generally doesn't improve. However, being my case is not the norm with this sort of thing (I was likely born with the syrinx, I have no Chiari malformation, and I've never suffered traumatic accidents) there is the possibility that I will improve, despite the odds. Frighteningly little is known about syrinxes and the treatment for them, so I'm glad I get to see a specialist rather than rely on the local doctors.

Favorite of the Month: Probably Howl's Moving Castle. I read it at the right time.
Least Favorite of the Month: Although there were other 3 Star reads this month, Romancing the Duke (Castles Ever After #1) by Tessa Dare disappointed me the most. It's still a good read.
Most Interesting of the Month (or Book I Learned the Most From): Obviously The Red Record by Ida B. Wells. Though I seldom read nonfiction, I'm glad I read that one.

Planning to Read in October:

I don't have many reading plans this October, but I would like to read Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (Dirk Gently #1) by Douglas Adams before the tv series comes out (October 22nd in the States).

Upcoming Posts:

I hope to review Faithful by Alice Hoffman among others before October is over. The syrinx problems have kept me busy, but I still think I can use my irritatingly numb hands to type out things, if they remain more functional than my legs are at this minute.

Happy Reading!

  1. I'm so glad to hear you finally have a reason for your walking issues! While it may not present many treatment options, putting a name on it is a really good first step. You've had quite the successful reading month as well and while it doesn't look like they were all stellar, you got to do a lot of reading! I'm still working on catching up to my Goodreads goal (only 4 books behind right now!). Happy reading, Litha, and I hope you find some more answers about syrinx's and your particular case!

    1. Yes, I'm kind of glad I have a diagnosis but also nervous because it's a structural issue instead of something that could be remedied with pills. I think I've had a few worse reading months this year, so I'm trying to play catch up. I'm currently on track with my GR goal of 95 books- I hope you're able to catch up to your goal soon!

  2. You read double what I managed last month! I will be looking for your review of Faithful. I haven't read mine yet. I am curious to see what you fill up the rest of your reading time with in October. I hope you can get in to see the specialist soon. Have a wonderful new fortnight. :)

    1. I'm trying to make it to either 95 or 100 books read this year, so I am trying to squeeze in reading whenever I can. I hope to get in my review mood again for Faithful- I'm glad I have the ebook version, because I'm able to save more notes that way. I predict a random string of reads in October, but maybe I'll start another series read. I like my ARC-free schedule.

  3. I am glad you have a better idea of what is causing your recent health problems. That must bring some relief. Hopefully the specialist will be able to offer some solutions. Looks like you had a good reading month overall! My husband really liked Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and has been encouraging me to give it a try.

I hope you are having a good week!

    1. I'm glad too, in some ways. For a while it seemed like they'd try to blame it on the usual suspects- my weight, my gender/hysteria, and fibromyalgia (especially with the numbness in my arm). I'm not sure if I'm excited to hear what solutions the specialist might offer or not, as the main treatment for syrinx problems is surgery.

I finished Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency the other day, and while I found it highly entertaining, it didn't quite reach the heights of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for me. However, I think it's because HGttG had Marvin the paranoid android.
